That’s Not My Homepage!
Recently, we had a client who was attacked by Homepage Hijackers.
At first glance, their problem seemed simple enough. They did an update and a new search engine took over their homepage.
So, we popped the internet up and changed everything back to normal (they, like many of us, wanted Google as their default screen).
Surprisingly, the homepage was still incorrect!
The internet browser continued to default to Search.hemailassistant.com, which was quickly revealed to be malware.
Commonly known as Email Assistant, this virus is one of many ‘Homepage Hijackers’ which take over your default search engine in an effort to drive you to unsecure websites. Additionally, it can promote advertising that lead to businesses with more dangerous viruses.
The tricky part is, it often looks simply like an updated version of your favorite search engine.
Furthermore, Homepage Hijackers can attack any browser or search engine.
How to Fix the Problem
Fortunately, if caught early, Homepage Hijackers can be easy to stop.
If you are using Windows, go to Settings on the top right-hand corner of your browser.
Next, select More Tools followed by Extensions.
A screen will appear which has all the Add-Ons attached to your browser. You should recommend any of the Add-Ons that should be there (Google Docs, for example, might be listed).
The Homepage Hijacker you are being attacked by will show up on this screen under one of many names. Just choose any program you are not familiar with and click Remove.
Close and reopen your internet browser and everything should go back to normal.
Still Having Issues?
In the rare situation that the problem persists, further steps will need to be taken as the malware most likely has affected other programs on your computer.
If this is the case, we recommend obtaining assistants from a trusted IT Professional.
If you don’t have an IT Team at your side, give us a call at 800-480-9109 and we can advise you on what steps to take to rid yourself of the virus in the swiftest possible fashion.
